Ilosone Prescribing Information
Ilosone is an antibiotic drug which comes under the generic name erythromycin. It is used in the treatment of several kinds of bacterial infections. It is very potent in the treatment of “strep” infections in the patients who are allergic to penicillin and have a history of a heart condition known as rheumatic heart disease. It is taken by oral as well as parenteral route.
Mode of Action of Ilosone
Ilosone has bacteriostatic activity. It works by arresting the growth of bacteria that lead to infection. It does not let the bacteria to grow and hence, helps in arresting the infection.
Uses of Ilosone
Ilosone (erythromycin) is used in the treatment of several infections like respiratory tract infections, skin infections, pelvic inflammatory diseases, syphilis, Chlamydia infections, et al. It is indicated for actinomycosis, acne, anthrax, chancroid, Lyme disease, Gastroparesis, relapsing fever and Lymphogranuloma venerum.
It is used in the patients who have rheumatic heart diseases and are allergic to penicillin.
It is also used in the treatment of Legionnaires' disease.
How to Use Ilosone
The oral Ilosone has to be taken with water. You must take it in an empty stomach. You can take it one hour before or may be two hours after having your meal. If you experience upset stomach, you can take it with food or must take it the way advised by the doctor.
Side- effects of Ilosone
Erythromycin or Ilosone poses many side- effects. Some side- effects are common and are manageable while, some are rare and serious. The side- effects of Ilosone include:

- Abdominal cramps or discomfort
Less common side- effects of Ilosone:
- Severe pain in stomach
- Skin rashes, itching or redness
- Fatigue or weakness
- Itching and discharge from vagina
- Sore tongue and mouth
- Yellow skin or eyes. This is very rare side effect that occurs only with the use of erythromycin estolate
In older adults, erythromycin can lead to:
- Loss of hearing on taking high doses
- Liver disease
- Kidney disease
Less common side- effects with erythromycin injections:
- Redness, swelling or pain on the site of injection
Rare side- effects with erythromycin injections:
- Repeated fainting
- Slow or irregular heartbeat
- Temporary loss of hearing
Pregnancy and Breast- feeding
The pregnant ladies that take erythromycin estolate might suffer some side- effects with their liver. But, no erythromycin is known to cause other issues or birth defects.
This drug is very likely to pass into breast milk. But, there are no reports of any abnormality in the nursing baby. Hence, if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant during the course of use of erythromycin or you are a lactating mother, you must discuss it with your doctor beforehand. Your doctor will then be able to prescribe you with the best erythromycin that has minimal side- effects.
