Primary components

These components are also known as health related fitness. They are components that can be affected if an individual does not invoke a health and fitness plan. The components include:

Components Of Health

Body composition- this is the proportion of fat-free mass which include organs, blood, fluids, bone and muscle to fat mass. The long-term adaptations of enhancing body composition include improved BMI, improved body functions, decreased risk of cardiovascular disease and improved metabolic rate.

Flexibility- this is the amount of movement that a joint is able to make. Every joint is accorded a different amount of flexibility. Improved flexibility has some advantage to the health and fitness of the individual. The benefits include improved posture, decreased risk of injury, improved body movements and improved range of motion.

Cardio respiratory capacity is the capability of oxygen to be taken in by the body, circulate and utilize it to create energy necessary for physical activity. In health and fitness, this component is called aerobic capacity. The capacity involves aerobic power, aerobic strength and aerobic endurance. The benefits cardio respiratory training include increased stroke volume and cardiac output, improved endurance and decreased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Muscular activity- this involves the capability of the muscles. It includes muscle strength, muscle endurance and muscle power. Long-term adaptations involved with this type of component include improved posture, increased strength, improved joint strength and increased metabolic rate.

Secondary components

The secondary components of health and fitness are those involved in any physical activity are essential for daily functioning. Different levels of success are achieved depending on how well these components are developed and utilized. Both primary and secondary components are important and should not be ignored as they aid in the daily completion of tasks. The components include speed, balance, power, coordination, agility, mental capability, and reaction time. Speed provides a means to move rapidly. Balance is the ability to maintain and keep up a certain body position. Power is the result of speed and strength. Coordination is the ability to utilize all body parts together to achieve smooth motion. Agility involves the ability to change directions faster. Mental capability is concentration when working out to improve the effects of training. Reaction time is the amount of time needed to respond to stimuli.

Those who participate in daily workouts do so to improve the current as well as the future levels of health. An optimal state of well-being is usually the aim of everyone taking part.
